American Gangster: Denzel & Crowe Discuss the Drug War

“That’s the way it is.”
American Gangster is about the New York City heroin trade in the early 1970s. It is based on the real-life adventures of heroin kingpin Frank Lucas (played by Denzel Washington), and police officer Richie Roberts (played by Russell Crowe). The American columnist, George Will, has called its humane portrayal of Lucas a “manipulation of viewers.” By accurately describing Lucas’s accomplishments Will writes that American Gangster,
entices viewers into the moral vertigo of forgetting the human carnage among users of the high-quality heroin that Lucas’s organizational skills enabled him to sell cheap.
Will then praises the movie for realistically showing the “suppurating needle sores” and the heroin addicted mothers passing out on filthy mattresses next to their sobbing babies.
Will, like those who only know heroin through mainstream media portrayals, cannot see past the needles and addicts. If Hamilton Wright had not hoodwinked the American Congress into criminalizing opiates in 1915 desperate heroin junkies would not exist. Opium would merely be smoked like it still is in numerous parts of South Asia. (Heroin is a more chemically potent form of opium.) It is the war on drugs that has forced the cost of opiates so astronomically high (see LINK) that those unfortunate enough to become addicted to it (just like with alcohol, a small percentage of total users LINK) cannot afford to lose any of it through the smoking process. Because of this, they must inject it directly into their veins.
Whereas Will thought American Gangster was manipulative in portraying a drug dealer as a human being, the actual manipulation occurred with the multiple gratuitous shots of needles hitting home. Lucas’s commitment to pure product, his “Blue Magic” brand, could enable people to smoke heroin and avoid the debilitating effects of injecting heroin cut with a potpourri of street substances. (Regular heroin usage is actually physically harmless. It is the side-effects of criminalization that make it dangerous. LINK)
It would also be interesting to know if Richie Roberts’ partner actually died of heroin overdose or if it was a “morality lesson” added to the script. (Apparently a lot was added. LINK) Movies and television regularly kill every heroin using character with an OD despite the mathematical absurdity of this. (The annual mortality rate of a heroin user dying of an overdose is similar to that of a motorcyclist dying from a motorcycle crash.)
In the movie, Roberts says to Lucas:
I got hundreds of parents of dead kids, addicts who ODed on your product and that’s my story for the jury. That’s how I make it all stick. This man murdered thousands of people and he did it from a penthouse driving a Lincoln.
Only someone who believes the heroin death rate portrayed on television and in the movies can hear the “thousands of people” line without laughing. In 2003 it is unlikely even 4,000 people died of any type of opiate overdose (e.g. heroin, morphine, OxyContin) in the entire country. When Nixon was declaring that drugs were a national emergency in the early 1970s more Americans were dying from choking on food or falling down stairs than from illegal drugs.
Politicians and government bureaucrats could save thousands of lives by ending the inane drug war that declares otherwise law-abiding drug users and drug dealers as public enemies. Legalizing heroin would make heroin overdoses as rare as alcohol overdoses. (To read more about this and how the government does not even legalize the heroin OD antidote see LINK.) Legalizing would also end the countless deaths caused by drug turf wars. Whereas the government could make a difference, Lucas could not. As Lucas and Roberts discuss in the movie:
Lucas: Do you really think that putting me behind bars is going to change anything on the streets? Them dope fiends are gonna steal it. They gonna steal for it. They gonna die for it. Putting me in or out ain’t gonna change a thing.
Roberts: Then that’s the way it is.
Lucas: That’s the way it is.

Where in the middle east is opium smoked in cafes?
Opium is illegal in most ME countries!Ya big daftie ye!
Mr. McGilveray:
Opium is illegal everywhere due to American diplomatic pressure, but that does not mean the law is enforced everywhere. Opium is smoked publicly in the Middle East. It is a traditional Arabic medicine and Islamic clerics consider alcohol a greater concern.
However, I do agree my wording was poor as it implied opium is widely used as a social drug in the Middle East. Hashish smoking, not opium smoking, is common for that purpose.
Because of this I will change the wording from “Opium would merely be smoked in cafes like it still is in the Middle East,” to “Opium would merely be smoked like it still is in numerous parts of South Asia.”
Please e-mail if you would like documentation of these assertions. Thanks for reading my blog.
I’m sorry, but neither hashish or opium are social norms in the middle east. Hash is easier to get, for sure, than opium, but it is far easier and socially acceptable in Europe and North American to do either than the Middle East. Where have you got your information from?
Mischa:
I am basing most of my information on parts of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Laos. Several sources discussed Muslim attitudes and I lackadaisically applied that to the Middle East. My apologies.
I still stand by my replaced wording in the blog post, “Opium would merely be smoked like it still is in numerous parts of South Asia.”
I am more careful about by assertions in my book (over 2,000 footnotes) than on my blog. Now that I know people are actually reading the blog, I will be attentive in the future. Thanks for reading and taking the time to correct me.
Top 10 Logo Design Tips
Over the years, MapleLeaflogo.com has been designing logos and accumulating articles and resources for
its clients. Finally, they’ve released a concise set of logo design tips to help you along with your project,
and ensure that you end up with a logo that will perfectly suit your needs. So without further ado, here are
Maple Leaf Logo’s top ten tips!
1. Keep it Simple!
A complicated logo will not only make your logo difficult to reproduce and maintain, but you will also fail to
engage your audience.
2. Engage your Audience
If people are able to discover the ‘trick’ of your logo within a reasonable amount of time, this will help to
create a memorable and entertaining experience between you and your audience.
3. Logo Longevity - Think Ahead!
There are many long-standing companies whose logos have stood the test of time. Type-based logos
are good for this. The IBM logo is a great example. They offer a variety of products and services on an
international level, and also provide research, design and consulting services. They’ve succeeded in
communicating all of this through their logo, but we think they are due for an update very soon!
4. Vector is better
Although it’s tempting to use detailed illustrations and complex 3d effects in a logo, chances are that it will
not serve you well. Clean, crisp lines with very limited colors are almost always more effective than an
illustration or complex 3d rendering.
5. Adaptability - Be Ready for Change
Generally speaking, the best thing for small business start-ups is to have an icon and logo-type designed
at the same time. This will allow you to use the logo as a stand-alone image, or use it along with the type-font
name as well. Often times, companies will use only the icon on its products and packaging materials.
This is a common practice among software companies and book publishers.
6. Make it Memorable
A good test to ensure that your logo design is memorable is to show it to a friend and ask him/her to retrace it
a week later. A good design should use a recognizable shape or element for it to be easily remembered.
7. Relevance - Keep your Products and Services in Mind
A memorable logo is great, but it should also get your customers to start thinking about the products or
services that you offer. You should ensure that the logo relates to your business in some shape or form.
Yes, the monkey can sell just about anything from cigarettes to cell phones, but there’s a limit! Isn’t there?
8. Choose your Colors Wisely
Try to keep your selection of colors down to two or three. Too many colors will increase your cost of production and make it more difficult to reproduce.
One interesting idea that we’ve seen used is to change the color of the logo on things like business cards
and stationery depending on the market segmentations of the clientele.
9. Keep it Unique
This should be straightforward. You want to be sure that your company is easily identified among your
industry and competitors. Be sure to carefully research your industry and target market before embarking
on a logo design.
10. Versatility Pays Dividends
One of the most important attributes of a good logo design is versatility. You want to portray a consistent
image across all of your marketing materials, including signs, letterhead, business cards, products lines, and
web sites.

I’ve often heard tattoo artists rant about people getting visible tattoos (hands, neck) the moment they hit 18 before they have other work.
Recently I discovered a rant on quite a respected figure in the tattoo community’s Myspace. I say rant, it was more like pure venomous hatred.
It would seem that some find young people with visible ink, impatient and disrespectful, and they must all just think it’s cool to have visible work.
I’m 23, My first tattoo was on my shoulder, then my wrists, then I got a full sleeve. Then I moved to my hands, then neck and I also have a large part of my leg tattooed.
It took me about two years to get the opportunity to get my hand tattooed by my idol, and then my neck by an artist I greatly admire, a lot of time, effort and thought was put into both of these.
Even though I’m somewhat older and do have a fair bit of coverage, I might still be classed as young and “under-tattooed” to have such visible work, and I can’t help but think that’s kinda crazy!
Sure I’ve seen some 18 year olds with kanji on their necks or poorly executed skulls on their hands, and you can almost tell they rushed into it, wanting everyone to see their new work as clearly as possible, and fine that to me is impatient and maybe even attention seeking.
Basically what I’m trying to say is that not everyone who has visible work is disrespectful to the art, some people invest a great deal of time, money and effort into getting that particular location inked with the highest standard work possible.
It’s kinda funny to find prejudice within a community that tries so hard to divert it away from itself.
